Windows vs Linux:   Linux was developed to manage servers and was designed for use by technical experts.  Windows was also developed as a GUI operating system by Microsoft to replace its older command line managed operating system MSDOS. For Windows: Windows is probably the most commonly available operating system. There is usually at least some technical support available for Windows and there are a lot of publications and websites available on how to use Windows. Windows usually comes pre-installed on brand-name computers although the versions of Windows on locally produced computers in developing countries are often pirated versions. Windows 7 has been very popular and are relatively fast. Windows drivers are available for nearly all available hardware. Application software for Windows is usually easy to download and install. Windows 8 has not been as well received...

What is an IP Address?

Image
" IP " stands for Internet Protocol, so an IP address is an Internet Protocol address. What does that mean? An Internet Protocol is a set of rules that govern Internet activity and facilitate completion of a variety of actions on the World Wide Web. Therefore an Internet Protocol address is part of the systematically laid out interconnected grid that governs online communication by identifying both initiating devices and various Internet destinations, thereby making two-way communication possible.   An IP address consists of four numbers, each of which contains one to three digits, with a single dot (.) separating each number or set of digits. Each of the four numbers can range from 0 to 255. Here's an example of what an IP address might look like: 78.125.0.209. This innocuous-looking group of four numbers is the key that empowers you and me to send and retrieve data over our Internet connections, ensuring that our messages, as well as our requests for data and the da...

ubuntu vs windows 8 (apps)

Image
Apps Whereas Windows 8 Pro  comes bundled  with Microsoft's Internet Explorer 10 browser, Ubuntu comes with a wide assortment of open-source software packages such as Firefox, Thunderbird,  LibreOffice , and more, offering both individual and business users a pretty full suite of functionality. Beyond those bundled programs, both Ubuntu and Windows 8 offer app stores to help users find the additional software they need. Dating back to 2009, the Ubuntu Software Center now houses more than 40,000 apps, ranging from games to productivity tools to educational resources. In addition, by usingWine or CodeWeaver's CrossOver, you can run Windows programs on top of Linux. The Windows Store just launched with Windows 8, and at the time of its debut it included just over 9000 apps. Microsoft execs have said that they hope to provide 100,000 apps in the Windows Store within 90 days of the Windows launch. Operating system binaries and drivers, however, ...

installing linux (ubantu) on your computer

Image
There are a few different methods for installing Linux on your computer, but generally, the most popular way is by downloading and burning a live CD . The Live CD Method You'll have to get your live CD from the net, so head to your distribution's home page (like  Ubuntu's )and look for a downloads section. Most will make it pretty easy to find. In addition, many sites will even host BitTorrent downloads of their distribution too, which will be a little faster—so if you see a link for "alternative downloads", check that out. Otherwise you can probably download it directly from the site. You'll probably have a few different choices when you download. For example, some distributions have netbook-optimized versions, while others (like Ubuntu) will offer different versions based on the  desktop environment  they come with. And, most will have 32- and 64-bit versions available as well . Once your .ISO file is done downloading, open up your favorit...

Installing Software on Linux

One of the most difficult things to get used to in the Linux world is installing new software packages. In the world of Windows, every program comes with a  Setup.exe  program that asks you some very easy questions and takes care of the job for you. While Linux software can be almost that easy to install, you will sometimes find software that seems to fight every step of the way. I can’t cover all the problems you might run into, but I’ll try to give you the basics and a few pointers to help get you over the rough spots. Software tends to come in “packages”. In the Windows world a package is a  Setup.exe  or a program.zip  file. On a Mac a package is a  program.dmg  or a  program.sit  file. In the Linux world, there are several kinds of packages, and each distribution has its own preferred package format. The standard Linux package format (according to the  Linux Standard Base ) is  RPM . RPM is a packaging system originally...

is Linux successful?

Image
Linux is already successful on many different kinds of devices, but there are also many technological areas where Linux is moving towards, even as desktop and server development continues to grow faster than any other operating system today. Linux is being installed on the system BIOS of laptop and notebook computers, which will enable users to turn their devices on in a matter of seconds, bringing up a streamlined Linux environment. This environment will have Internet connectivity tools such as a web browser and an e-mail client, allowing users to work on the Internet without having to boot all the way into their device's primary operating system--even if that operating system is Windows. At the same time, Linux is showing up on mobile Internet devices (MIDs). This includes embedded devices such as smartphones and PDAs, as well as netbook devices--small laptop-type machines that feature the core functionality of their larger counterparts in a smaller, more energ...

The Birth of Linux

Image
The Birth of Linux On August 25, 1991, a Finn computer science student named Linus Torvalds made the following announcement to the Usenet group comp.os.minux: "I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) (among other things)." The “Minix” Torvalds referred to is a variant of the UNIX operating system, used as a guideline for his the free operating system he wanted to run on the x86-based consumer PCs of the day. “gnu” refers to the set of GNU (GNU Is Not Unix) tools first put together by Richard Stallman in 1983. UNIX, the operating system that started it all, had its origins in the old Bell Labs back in the early 60s. Torvalds built the core of the Linux operati...

what is linux?

Image
Linux is very similar to other operating systems, such as Windows and OS X. But something sets Linux apart from these operating systems. The Linux operating system represented a $25 billion ecosystem in 2008. Since its inception in 1991, Linux has grown to become a force in computing, powering everything from the New York Stock Exchange to mobile phones to supercomputers to consumer devices. As an open operating system, Linux is developed collaboratively, meaning no one company is solely responsible for its development or ongoing support. Companies participating in the Linux economy share research and development costs with their partners and competitors. This spreading of development burden amongst individuals and companies has resulted in a large and efficient ecosystem and unheralded software innovation. Where is Linux? One of the most noted properties of Linux is where it can be used. Windows and OS X are predominantly found on personal computing devices such as de...
